iPhone 12: All-in on Oled

Apple is expected to release four new iPhone 12 models this year with OLED displays.

The iPhone X was the first iPhone to make the switch to OLED, but Apple has also introduced new LCD iPhone as well. For example, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max both feature OLED displays, but the iPhone 11 still uses an LCD panel.

This may be the first time Apple decides to release an entire series of iPhone devices with OLED technology.

According to the industry reports, the iPhone 12 will be available in 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch screen sizes, while the iPhone 12 Pro will be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen sizes.

Korean news site The Elec claims that LG will provide the 6.1-inch OLED displays for the 12 Max, while Samsung will continue to provide its display technology for the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays will both use an “on-cell touch” panel Samsung refers to as “Y-Octa” technology, as 9to5Mac details. This panel is basically an OLED panel that has touch function built in. Touch sensor is placed on top of thin film encapsulation inside of a panel. Touch function in the past attaches a touch film on a panel. Because on-cell touch OLED panel does not require a separate film, it can lead to a thinner display and reduce production cost.

It is also said that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will sport 120Hz screen refresh rates. And they could have 3x zoom on the rear camera.
